Oltre le due edizioni CD e DeLuxe, è stata rilasciata anche una versione in vinile da 180 grammi come parte della collezione Back in Black. Questa edizione presenta il missaggio originale di Hergest Ridge, ma con un suono nettamente migliorato rispetto alla vecchia versione in vinile.
La copertina è radicalmente differente da quella originale, raffigurante un aeromodello e la fotografia aerea di Hergest Ridge (Regno Unito) presa da Google Earth. Sembra che Mike Oldfield non sia stato soddisfatto della copertina originale e abbia colto l'occasione per commissionarne una nuova.
E' stata rilasciata anche un'edizione limitata dell'album (250 copie), comprendente una edizione DeLuxe, un LP e la stampa della copertina firmata da Mike stesso.
La versione demo, ruvida, in molte parti ancora embrionale, è una chicca interessantissima per i fans e gli estimatori dell'opera.
Infine, i due singoli inseriti: la "Spanish Tune" non è che un estratto del disco, ma la versione di "In Dulci Jubilo" è la prima mai pubblicata, sinora reperibile solo come B-side di un singolo ormai rarissimo.

La collezione offre le versioni originali dell'album, rimasterizzate per un pubblico moderno, le versioni demo inedite, più il missaggio originale incluso nella versione in vinile del 1974 ed alcuni filmati per accompagnare entrambe le parti di Hergest Ridge.
Partendo dal mix di influenze progressive e del folk già esplorate da Mike Oldfield per la prima volta con Tubular Bells, il tanto atteso secondo album, Hergest Ridge emana un fascino tutto proprio. Più tranquillo e calmo, atmosferico e inquietante, Ridge Hergest è il suono dell'ambiente rilassante nel quale Oldfield si è immerso dopo il successo travolgente del suo debutto.
Con suoni che evocano immagini di dolci colline gallesi e puri scenari pastorali - influenze genuine dagli spot naturalistici britannici - Ridge Hergest serve da rifugio per Oldfield dal trauma interno come se facesse un viaggio nella desolazione della natura selvaggia. Suoni di chitarra, mischiati a quelli di delicati flauti e di grandi ottoni, svelano i meandri di una mente inasprita e intimorita di fronte all'ostilità del mondo.

Mantenendo il formato dei due album precedenti - Tubular Bells e Hergest Ridge - Oldfield rimane fedele alle sue radici concettuali in Ommadawn, ma si lascia influenzare da una gamma più ampia di stili musicali questa volta: folk, musica celtica e suoni mediorientali.
Di conseguenza, data la maggiore portata delle fonti creative alle quali Oldfield si è ispirato, Ommadawn viene definito come un picco creativo nella vasta carriera di Mike Oldfield.
Nel comporre per strumenti celtici tradizionali come le uilleann pipes (un tipo di cornamusa), Oldfield utilizza Ommadawn come punto di arrivo di una sua indagine spirituale come esperto musicale. Entrambe le edizioni su CD contengono anche "Guilty", leggendario singolo registrato da Oldfield nel 1979 a New York City, al culmine del movimento disco.
